Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Tropical Western Pacific. Inhabits sheltered outer reef slopes and lagoons rich in hard corals and algae between 5 and 20 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Acanthuridae. Reaches about 21 cm. Ovoid, laterally compressed body, with high-set eyes and a mouth equipped with small teeth.

Social Behavior: Active and territorial swimmer. Monitors the tank and displays moderate aggression toward congeneric surgeonfish or troublesome tankmates.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Gray-brown or bronze body. Characterized by a prominent white patch below the eye reaching the mouth, a yellow stripe along the anal and dorsal fins. Light blue tail.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Tank of at least 470 liters (125 gallons) with strong surface movement and powerful wavemakers. Ample rocky swimming lanes.

Diet and Feeding: Herbivore. Grazes constantly. Feed regularly with nori seaweed, spirulina, and enriched veggie pellets.

Water Quality: Stable temperature of 22-26°C (72-78°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025. Keep water clean and free of nitrates.

Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe. Does not cause any damage to hard or soft corals. Do not house with Acanthurus glaucopareius due to hybridization and fighting.

Aquarium Reproduction: Reproduction is not feasible in home aquariums. Pelagic larvae require conditions impossible to recreate at home.

Risks and Diseases: Extremely prone to Marine Ich (Cryptocaryon). The use of UV, ozone, and careful preventative quarantine are highly recommended.
