Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Tropical Indo-Pacific. Inhabits outer reef slopes and clear lagoons rich in algal pastures and exposed to strong surge down to 60 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Acanthuridae. Reaches about 21 cm. Oval and laterally compressed body, with a terminal mouth equipped with comb-like teeth to scrape algae.

Social Behavior: Very active fish, swims constantly throughout the tank. Displays strong intraspecific territoriality and aggression toward similarly patterned fish.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Dark purple-black body. Characterized by a prominent white oval patch below the eye and a yellow stripe running along the base of the dorsal and anal fins. Light blue tail.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Tank of at least 470 liters (125 gallons) with excellent water movement and strong oxygenation. Ample open swimming space and rocks for grazing.

Diet and Feeding: Herbivore. Provide high daily amounts of marine algae (nori), spirulina, veggie pellets, and fresh foods for herbivorous fish.

Water Quality: Maintain temperature at 22-26°C (72-78°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025. Absolute water stability is critical to prevent parasites.

Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe. Does not harm corals or healthy invertebrates. Avoid housing with other Acanthurus surgeonfish.

Aquarium Reproduction: Reproduction is not feasible in home aquariums. In the wild, they spawn in pairs or small groups releasing pelagic eggs.

Risks and Diseases: Extremely sensitive species to Marine Ich (Cryptocaryon) and Velvet (Oodinium). Highly recommended to run a UV sterilizer.
