Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Broadly distributed in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea, from East Africa to Bali, Indonesia. Inhabits outer reef slopes and deep lagoons.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the Acanthuridae family. Does not grow the frontal horn seen in some Naso species. Possesses two bright orange defensive spines on each side of the tail base. Grows to 45 cm (18 inches).
Social Behavior: Generally peaceful and bold. Due to its large size, it requires a vast territory and may become aggressive if confined to small systems.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Sleek grey-blue body with orange lips and a yellow forehead/dorsal fin. Mature males develop long, trailing black filaments from the top and bottom of their tail.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Demands an extremely large aquarium of at least 1000 liters (260 gallons, minimum 7 feet long). A secure mesh lid is mandatory, as this species is a strong jumper.
Diet and Feeding: Herbivorous, with a preference for brown macroalgae (Sargassum). Provide daily nori sheets, high-quality spirulina pellets, and occasional frozen mysis for protein.
Water Quality: Requires pristine water, high oxygenation, and powerful currents. Keep temperature at 24-28°C (75-82°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, and KH 8-12.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef safe. Peaceful with non-tangs. Do not mix with other Naso species unless in huge public displays. Best housed with active, robust tankmates.
Aquarium Breeding: Unreported in domestic setups due to the immense open water column required for spawning rituals and pelagic egg dispersal.
Risks and Diseases: Highly prone to marine ich (Cryptocaryon) and velvet (Oodinium). Highly active nature makes it a significant jump risk if startled.
