Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: The Volitans Lionfish (*Pterois volitans*), also known as the Red Lionfish, is a massive, visually spectacular, and highly predatory marine teleost natively endemic to the deep, warm coral reefs and rocky drop-offs of the Indo-Pacific Ocean.
ECOLOGICAL CRISIS: They are now considered one of the most destructive and successful invasive species in human history, having completely colonized the Western Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico, devastating native reef ecosystems.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Scientifically classified within the Scorpaenidae (Scorpionfish) family, they possess a morphology designed for intimidation and ambush predation. Fully mature adults are massive, reaching 38.0 to 45.0 centimeters (15.0-18.0 inches) in total length. Their body is robust, but heavily disguised by spectacular, fan-like, oversized pectoral fins and dramatically elongated dorsal fin rays.
CRITICAL FEATURE: They are highly venomous. Each of the 13 dorsal spines contains a powerful neurotoxin.
Social Behavior: They are peaceful toward fish they cannot swallow, highly, and largely nocturnal ambush predators. During the day, they spend hours suspended motionless under rock overhangs or deep caves, using their massive pectoral fins to corner prey against the reef. At dusk, they actively patrol the reef. They are incredibly slow swimmers, relying entirely on their elaborate camouflage and lightning-fast strike (a massive inhalation that vacuums prey into their mouth) to feed.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Sexual dimorphism is visually non-existent. Their coloration is iconic, warning predators of their venomous nature (aposematism). The body and the massive pectoral fins are decorated with a hypnotic, highly complex zebra-stripe pattern consisting of stark, alternating vertical bands of bold red, maroon, brown, and pure white. They possess bizarre, fleshy tentacles (cirri) above their eyes and around their mouth, which act as highly effective sensory organs and camouflage.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: The aquarium architecture MUST accommodate their massive adult size, heavy biological load, and nature. A minimum 450-liter (120-gallon) marine aquarium is strictly required.
CRITICAL REQUIREMENT: The tank MUST feature massive, cavernous rock structures and deep overhangs large enough for the adult fish to completely hide under during daylight hours. They prefer low to moderate water flow and dim lighting. Because they are heavy polluters, mechanical filtration must be immense.
Diet and Feeding: They are obligate, highly specialized macroscopic carnivores.
CRITICAL WARNING: In the wild, they eat live fish and crustaceans. In the aquarium, they MUST be aggressively weaned off live food (feeder goldfish are nutritionally devoid and will cause lethal liver disease). They MUST be trained to eat frozen, meaty seafood from a feeding stick 2-3 times a week. Feed them whole silversides, shrimp (with shell), squid, and chunks of white fish. Overfeeding will cause fatty liver disease.
Water Quality: Originating from deep reefs, they are incredibly robust, highly disease-resistant, and forgiving of minor parameter fluctuations, which contributes to their success as an invasive species. They demand stable tropical heat (24-27°C / 75-81°F). Specific gravity (salinity) MUST be maintained precisely between 1.020 and 1.025. They require hard, highly alkaline water (pH 8.1 - 8.4). Flawless biological filtration and a massive, significantly oversized protein skimmer are unequivocally mandatory.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Compatibility requires extreme caution based entirely on size. They are completely peaceful toward fish that are physically too large to fit in their cavernous mouths.
CRITICAL WARNING: They WILL relentlessly hunt, swallow, and digest ANY fish or ornamental crustacean (shrimp, crabs) that is less than half their body length. Excellent tankmates are large, robust fish (large Tangs, large Angelfish, Eels, Groupers). They are generally "reef-safe" regarding corals, but their massive waste ruins SPS.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding the Volitans Lionfish in captivity has rarely been achieved by hobbyists but is heavily studied due to their invasive nature. In the wild, they are highly prolific pelagic spawners. Courtship occurs at dusk; the female releases a pair of massive, hollow, buoyant mucus masses containing tens of thousands of eggs. These egg masses drift in the open ocean until hatching. Raising the highly predatory larvae requires specialized, massive industrial plankton cultures.

If stung, immerse the wound in scalding hot water (not boiling, but as hot as tolerable) to denature the venom and seek immediate medical attention.
