Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Tropical Indo-Pacific, from Mauritius to the Society Islands, north to southern Japan, and south to northern Australia. Inhabits coral reefs rich in debris and shaded overhangs.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Scorpaenidae (synonym Nemapterois biocellatus). Reaches up to 13 cm. Distinguished by two long fleshy whisker-like barbels on the upper jaw and fan-like pectoral fins.
Social Behavior: Peaceful but highly secretive and nocturnal. Spends the day hanging upside down under rocky overhangs, emerging at dusk to ambush crustaceans.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Zebra-like pattern with brown, black, and orange vertical bands. Features two distinct dark ocelli (eyespots) ringed with yellow on the soft dorsal fin. Males are slightly larger with longer barbels.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 115 liters (30 gallons). It is crucial to arrange rockwork to form overhangs, dark caves, and shaded areas to mimic its natural shelter.
Diet and Feeding: Demanding predator. Initially accepts only live foods (live ghost shrimp or river shrimp). Transitioning to frozen foods (mysis, krill) requires patience and the use of a feeding stick.
Water Quality: Sensitive to organic pollutants; requires good biological filtration. pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.026, temperature 22-28°C (72-82°F).
Compatibility and Tankmates: Reef-safe with corals. Not compatible with small fish (like gobies) or small ornamental shrimp, which will be eaten. Avoid aggressive tankmates that steal food.
Aquarium Reproduction: Reproduction is not documented in home aquariums. In nature, females release a floating gelatinous egg raft.
Risks and Diseases: Venom risk: the dorsal fin spines are highly venomous, causing severe pain. Use extreme caution during tank maintenance.
