Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Indian Ocean, primarily found in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and south along the East African coast. Inhabits sheltered, silty reefs.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Pomacanthidae family, genus Pomacanthus. Reaches 40 cm (16 inches). High, compressed blackish-blue body, characterized by a prominent vertical yellow saddle.

Social Behavior: Highly territorial, solitary as an adult. Claims broad areas of the reef. Constantly nips at rock surfaces and invertebrates in search of food.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Deep blue-black body with a bright yellow saddle-like band on the sides and a yellow tail. Juveniles have light blue and white stripes on black. No sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a large tank of at least 680 liters with moderate to strong flow. Create sturdy rock structures with spacious caves for hiding and grazing.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Sponges are a fundamental dietary requirement. Feed with prepared marine angelfish feeds, algae, and small frozen crustaceans.

Water Quality: Temperature 22°C - 28°C, stable pH 8.1 - 8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025, KH 8-12, GH 15-25. Heavy water filtration and oxygenation are required.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Semi-aggressive. Extremely territorial toward other large angelfish or conspecifics. Not reef-safe; will nip at corals and clams.

Aquarium Breeding: Not reproduced in home aquariums. In the wild, they are pelagic spawners releasing eggs in pairs into open water.

Risks and Diseases: Susceptible to marine ich and HLLE (lateral line erosion) if diet is deficient in sponge and algae. Avoid introduction into immature tanks.
