Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the Eastern Pacific Ocean, from the Gulf of California to Peru, including the Galapagos Islands. Inhabits shallow rocky reefs down to 30 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacanthidae. Features a deep, laterally compressed body. Reaches a maximum standard length of 45 cm. Prominent preopercular spine.

Social Behavior: Solitary and highly territorial. Actively defends its territory against conspecifics and other large fishes. Feeds on sponges, tunicates, and algae in the wild.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Dramatic color transition: juveniles have curved black, yellow, and bright blue vertical bands. Adults become brownish-grey with yellow markings.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a massive aquarium of at least 800 liters with robust rockwork to establish territory boundaries and reduce aggression.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Requires specialized angelfish foods containing sponge material, supplemented with frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and marine algae.

Water Quality: Maintain stable water quality parameters: temperature 21-26 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025, and high-performance filtration.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Highly territorial toward other angelfish. Not considered safe for reef tanks with corals, as it is likely to nip at stony corals and clams.

Aquarium Breeding: Captive breeding is not successfully achieved. In nature, they spawn in pairs, releasing pelagic eggs into the water column.

Risks and Diseases: Vulnerable to common marine skin parasites if stressed or kept in cramped conditions. High water quality and quarantine are vital.
