Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Native to the central Pacific Ocean, with density peaks around Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, and Tahiti. Inhabits outer coral slopes facing the open sea, in areas of strong surge and hyper-oxygenated water, where the growth of microalgae and coral encrustations is abundant.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Universally known as the Flame Angelfish. It is the most popular and desired member of the Centropyge genus. Rounded and compact shape, protected by the powerful gill spine. Unlike many brightly colored marine fish, it retains its striking coloration both as a juvenile and an adult, stopping at 10 cm (4 inches).
Social Behavior: A very bold, showy, and enterprising dwarf angelfish. It will spend 90% of its time "on display", swimming in plain sight among the corals. It is territorial, but its aggression is generally lower than the Bicolor or Argi, making it more manageable in crowded reef aquariums.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: One of the most spectacular liveries in the ocean: the body is bright orange-red (flame colored), crossed by 4-6 bold vertical black stripes resembling a tiger's coat. The trailing edges of the dorsal and anal fins feature deep electric blue striations. Males tend to be larger, with more intense red coloration and more elongated, pointed fins at the rear.
Care and observations
Aquarium Setup: Tank of 150 liters (40 gallons) as a starting base. Mature Live Rocks are the key to its survival, providing the main source of daily foraging. Ensure a rather strong water current (simulating coral drop-offs) and strong lighting to promote the growth of benthic algae on the rocks.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous micro-grazer. Incessantly scrapes rocks in search of microalgae, sponges, and small tunicates. Readily accepts plant-based flakes, Nori, mysis, and chopped krill in the aquarium. Feeding it in small doses 2-3 times a day is essential to discourage the occasional nipping at corals out of hunger.
Water Quality: Requires excellent quality tropical marine water. pH: 8.1 - 8.4 constant. Temperature: 24.0 - 28.0 °C (75-82 °F). High oxygen saturation via a powerful skimmer is vital. Very sensitive to rapid chemical changes and excess Copper (used improperly to treat diseases in the main tank).
Compatibility and Tankmates: Considered "Reef Safe with caution" (50/50). Many specimens will never touch a coral, others might decimate Acanthastrea or nip at the mantles of Tridacna clams. Perfect coexistence with Clownfish (Amphiprion), Blennies, Gobies, and Tangs. Never insert two males of the same species.
Aquarium Reproduction: Achieved in captivity only by specialized breeding facilities that have micro-plankton (specific rotifers and copepods) to feed the larvae. In home tanks, they often perform evening egg-release dances, but the eggs are eaten or destroyed by mechanical filters.
Risks and Diseases: Introduction without a quarantine period often brings Marine Velvet (Oodinium) or Marine Ich (Cryptocaryon irritans) into the tank. Being sensitive to Copper, pharmacological treatments in a hospital tank must be performed at half dosages and with extreme caution. Colors fade if spirulina is lacking.
