Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Native to Central and South America (Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela and Colombia). Frequents slow rivers, seasonal swamps and still water bodies with muddy substrates, abundance of submerged vegetation and uprooted trunks.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Blue Acara (Andinoacara pulcher / ex-Aequidens pulcher). The epithet "pulcher" means "beautiful". Classic laterally compressed profile typical of Acaras, with a convex skull. Morphologically solid, stocky, but at the same time elegant in its movements.

Social Behavior: Considered a "gentleman" among medium-sized South American cichlids. Generally placid and confident (approaches the glass to ask for food), but manifests a vigorous territoriality exclusively in the reproductive and offspring protection period.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Bright gray-green background furrowed by vertical dark bands (stress "tiger pattern") and massively dotted with a metallic blue-turquoise on the snout and flanks. Males slightly longer and more tapered, with "pointed" extensions on the anal and dorsal fin.

Care and observations

Aquarium Setup: Not a predator nor a massive "plant destroyer". 100-120 cm (40-48 inches) densely planted tank. Will not uproot species (Valisneria, Cryptocoryne) if anchored in sand or fine gravel. Flat stones (spawning sites) and curved woods are welcome.

Diet and Feeding: Micro-predator and ravenous omnivore. Consumes everything: quality balanced flakes, high-protein cichlid granules, freeze-dried brine shrimp. Excels in coloration if foraged often with beef heart (rarely), earthworms (washed) or thawed krill.

Water Quality: It is renowned for its very high tolerance to chemical fluctuations. Perfectly happy both in soft Amazonian waters and in common alkaline tap waters (up to pH 8.0 and moderate GH hardness). Excellent for beginners in the genus.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Perfect for community tanks of appropriate size. Excellent partners are medium Plecostomus (like Bristlenose), large Corydoras (e.g. C. sterbai), and thick schools of robust tetras (Emperors, Bleeding Heart). Will ignore fish that don't fit in its mouth.

Aquarium Reproduction: Among the easiest biparental Cichlids. Pairs (very faithful) clean a smooth stone laying up to 200 eggs on it. Extraordinary parental care: the mother ventilates, the father patrols. They will "relocate" the newborns in small holes in the sand.

Risks and Diseases: Extremely resistant to typical bacterial diseases, but the commercially hyper-reproduced variety (in particular the deformed crossbreed "Electric Blue Balloon") manifests frequent dwarfism, lethal spinal defects and hereditary blindness.
