Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Widely distributed in southern South America (Paraná, Paraguay and Uruguay River basins). Tolerates a wide range of habitats: streams, oxbow lakes, moderate rivers, usually among rocks and wood.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Pike Cichlid (Crenicichla lepidota). Medium-sized pike cichlid. Distinctly cylindrical and elongated body shape, enormous protrusible mouth, perfect hydrodynamic design for an ambush predator.

Social Behavior: Territorial and predatory. Lives isolated or in a fixed pair. Aggressive towards conspecifics and totally intolerant of any intruder entering its den.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Olive-green or brownish livery, with a clear broken black longitudinal line running from the eye to the tail. Dark spot bordered by a light edge ("ocellus") behind the gill cover. Adult females boast a bright white-bordered dorsal fin and a pinkish abdomen when breeding.

Care and observations

Aquarium Setup: Large aquarium (minimum 120-150 cm / 48-60 inches). Decor based on heavy intertwined wood, covered terracotta pots or hidden PVC pipes to provide safe dens. Free space for mid-water swimming.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivore/Piscivore (eats fish). In the aquarium they accept earthworms, shelled shrimp, mussels, silversides, crickets and various insects. Some specimens adapt to large sticks for carnivorous cichlids.

Water Quality: It is a very robust subtropical species, which tolerates winters at 18°C (64°F). This makes it poorly suited for warm Amazonian aquariums; it prefers cool and oxygenated temperatures (22-24°C / 71-75°F is ideal).

Compatibility and Tankmates: Instantly swallows anyone who fits in its mouth. Can only coexist with fish too large to be eaten (large Geophagus, armored Loricariids, large Characins like Metynnis).

Aquarium Reproduction: They lay hundreds of eggs inside deep caves, often in pipes. The female keeps watch inside the den, the male explodes in furious aggression against anyone approaching the perimeter.

Risks and Diseases: If the aquarium is too warm all year round (e.g. 28°C / 82°F), their metabolism suffers a drastic collapse, shortening their life. Risk of lethal marital quarrels if space is lacking.
