Yoyo Loach
Botia almorhae
The *Botia almorhae* takes its picturesque common name (Yoyo Loach) from the pattern of its juvenile livery, in which the dark stripes clearly seem to form the letters Y-O-Y-O along its flanks. It is one of the most robust and adaptable Botias available in the hobby, known for its insatiable hunger for snails and its extroverted, almost brazen behavior. It grows up to 15 centimeters (6 inches), requiring medium-large tanks, and is the perfect option for those seeking the temperament and interaction of the Clown Loach in a slightly more compact and much less delicate format.

Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Native to slow-moving rivers, gravelly streams and hill streams of northern India and Nepal. Thrives in clear, well-oxygenated waters flowing over rock and sand bottoms.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Yoyo Loach (Botia almorhae). Owes its common name to the particular juvenile reticulated pattern on the flanks that often forms the linked letters "Y" and "O". Has a stocky body, sensitive barbels and a retractable subocular spine used for defense.
Social Behavior: Very gregarious, intelligent and boisterous. MUST be kept in groups of at least 5-6 specimens. In the school they establish a strict but peaceful hierarchy, often swimming together or resting stacked on top of each other in hiding places.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The "Yo-Yo" pattern is very clear in juveniles, but fragments into a complex gray-brown or golden network (reticulation) in adults. Mature females become significantly rounder and more massive than males, especially when gravid.
Care and observations
Aquarium Setup: Robust tank of minimum 120 cm (48 inches). A bottom of fine sand or smooth gravel is essential so as not to injure the delicate barbels. Provide a multitude of dark hiding places (PVC pipes, piled rocks, hollow logs) and good water movement.
Diet and Feeding: Voracious omnivore. Famous snail predator (Planorbarius, Physa, Melanoides). In addition to gastropods, eagerly accepts bloodworms, bottom tablets, krill and even blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber). They emit audible "clicks" when eating at the surface.
Water Quality: They are scaleless fish, making them vulnerable to poor water quality and medications. They require pristine water, generous partial water changes and excellent oxygenation.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Excellent bottom cleaner, but its hyperactivity annoys slow or shy fish (e.g. dwarf Corydoras, Discus). Cohabits well with lively Barbs, Danios, large Tetras or peaceful medium-sized Cichlids.
Aquarium Reproduction: Almost impossible to reproduce in home aquariums. In nature, they undertake massive breeding migrations. The specimens on the market are wild-caught or reproduced in huge commercial vats with the aid of hormones (pituitary).
Risks and Diseases: Extremely sensitive to Ich (White Spot Disease) due to the lack of scales. Do not tolerate common copper-based antiparasitic drugs (use half dose) or salt.

- Sex ratio
- Banchi numerosi (5 o più). Tenuti singolarmente diventano letargici o aggressivi per insicurezza.
- Feeding frequency
- 1-2 volte al giorno. Emettono sonori "click" masticando il cibo.
- Bioload
- Medio-Alto (mangiano e sporcano in proporzione alla stazza)
- Flow
- Corrente moderata, ottima filtrazione
- Jump risk
- Covered tank required
- Reproduction
- Rarissimo in cattività domestica.
