Zebrafish are highly active, gregarious, and generally peaceful schooling fish that bring a lot of movement to any aquarium. They are constantly on the move and rarely show aggression towards other species, making them ideal for a community setting. Their boisterous nature, however, might intimidate much shyer or slower-moving tank mates.

As omnivorous micro-predators in the wild, Zebrafish readily accept a wide variety of foods in the home aquarium. Their diet should consist of a high-quality flake or micro-pellet as a staple, supplemented regularly with live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. Providing a varied diet ensures optimal health, vibrant coloration, and a robust immune system.

Life expectancy

3-5 years

In captivity, Danio rerio typically lives for 3 to 5 years under proper care and stable water conditions. Keeping the aquarium clean, performing regular water changes, and ensuring a low-stress environment is fundamental for their longevity. A balanced, high-quality diet prevents health issues and supports their dynamic lifestyle.

Sex ratio

Group

While a specific sex ratio is not strictly necessary for general keeping, a relatively balanced mix of males and females is often recommended. Maintaining a balanced group can help diffuse any minor squabbles or chasing behaviors among the males during mating rituals. Keeping more females than males can also reduce the harassment that individual females might experience from overly amorous males.

Feeding frequency

Twice daily

Due to their high energy levels and rapid metabolism, these active swimmers benefit from being fed small amounts of food two to three times per day. It is important to only offer what they can completely consume within a couple of minutes to prevent water quality issues from uneaten food. Fasting them for one day a week can also help clear their digestive tracts and prevent constipation.

Bioload

Zebrafish have a relatively low individual bioload, but because they are highly active schooling fish, they must be kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals. When calculating the total bioload for an aquarium, it is essential to factor in the size of the entire school rather than just a single fish. Regular water changes and adequate filtration are generally sufficient to handle their waste output effectively.

Hailing from streams and slow-moving rivers in South Asia, Zebrafish appreciate well-oxygenated water with a moderate to strong current. They can frequently be observed swimming directly into the flow of the filter output, which mimics their natural habitat and provides them with necessary exercise. Using a powerhead or a strong canister filter can help recreate this preferred environment.

Zebrafish are notorious jumpers and are incredibly adept at finding even the smallest gaps in an aquarium lid to escape through. A tight-fitting lid or a heavy glass canopy is an absolute necessity to prevent them from jumping out of the tank, especially when they are newly introduced or startled. Care must be taken to cover any openings around filter pipes or heater cables securely.

Reproduction

Egg scatterer

They are prolific egg scatterers and will frequently spawn in the home aquarium, often in the early morning shortly after the lights come on. However, they exhibit no parental care and will eagerly consume their own eggs if given the opportunity. To successfully raise fry, a separate breeding tank with a mesh bottom or dense spawning mops is required to protect the eggs from the adult fish.

Compatibility & tankmates

Peaceful

These fast-moving fish are generally peaceful and make excellent additions to community aquariums alongside other similarly sized, non-aggressive species. However, their constant activity can be stressful to slow-moving or timid tank mates, so careful selection of companions is necessary. They should never be kept with larger, predatory fish that might easily mistake them for a snack.

Tank level

Top/Middle

These highly energetic fish predominantly occupy the top and middle levels of the water column, where they spend most of their time darting about. They are surface feeders by nature and will eagerly rise to the top of the tank during feeding times to grab flakes or insects. Although they explore all areas of the tank, their strong preference is for the upper strata.
