Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the Thai islands of Koh Chang and Koh Yao Yai. Inhabits clear, slow to moderately flowing hill streams.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Cyprinidae. Sleek and streamlined body adapted for rapid swimming. Grows to about 5 cm.
Social Behavior: Extremely active and peaceful schooling fish. Requires a group of at least 6 individuals to maintain normal activity and group dynamics.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Stunning turquoise-blue base with horizontal golden lines. Males are slimmer and brighter, while females are rounder.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Minimum 60-liter tank with ample open swimming space. Include plants around the perimeter to act as cover.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Readily accepts dried flakes, micro granules, and frozen foods like brine shrimp. Feeds mostly at the surface.
Water Quality: Keep pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and GH between 5 and 12. Well-oxygenated water with a moderate current is highly preferred.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Peaceful community fish. Ideal tankmates include other danios, small tetras, and peaceful bottom fish.
Aquarium Breeding: Egg-scatterer. Scatter eggs over the substrate. Separate the parents to prevent egg consumption. Spawns easily.
Risks and Diseases: High jump risk due to their energetic and surface-dwelling nature. Ensure the aquarium lid fits tightly.
