Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to Southeast Asia, particularly the Mekong River basin in Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos. Found in clear, well-oxygenated forest streams and rivers.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Classified under the Cyprinidae family. Features a streamlined, slender body with two pairs of small barbels.
Social Behavior: Highly social, active schooling fish. A group of 6-8 is essential to maintain group cohesion and prevent stress.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Displays an iridescent rose-pink to violet-purple color along the body, especially in proper lighting. Males are slimmer and more colorful.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Long aquarium with substantial open swimming area and moderate current. Secure aquarium lid is a must due to jump risks.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Readily eats dried flakes, micro granules, and frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia.
Water Quality: Prefers clear, well-oxygenated water. Highly adaptable to pH (6.0-7.5) and temperature ranges (20-27°C).
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Best combined with other active, peaceful community fish like tetras, barbs, and Corydoras.
Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous egg scatterer. Spawns readily in a separate tank over a mesh or marble substrate to protect the eggs.
Risks and Diseases: Very hardy. The main risk is jumping out of uncovered tanks during maintenance or active chasing.
