Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed in the Ganges and Brahmaputra basins in India and Bangladesh. Inhabits shallow, slow-moving waters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Also classified as Pethia gelius. Nano species, reaching a size of just 3.5-4 cm. Short and deep body shape.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and somewhat shy schooling fish. Must be kept in a group of 6 to 10 to reduce stress and encourage active swimming.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Translucent golden-yellow body with irregular black markings. Males show a reddish horizontal stripe when spawning.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Minimum 60-liter tank with dense planting and floating plants to diffuse lighting. Dark substrate helps highlight colors.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous with a small mouth. Feed very fine flakes or micro pellets. Supplement with daphnia and baby brine shrimp.
Water Quality: Keep pH between 6.0 and 7.0, and GH between 4 and 14. Prefers cooler water (18-25°C). Avoid prolonged high temperatures.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Ideal for quiet community aquariums with other tiny species like rasboras or corydoras. Avoid large, boisterous tankmates.
Aquarium Breeding: Egg-scatterer. Scatter eggs over fine mosses. Parents eat their spawn; use a separate breeding tank for successful hatching.
Risks and Diseases: Highly sensitive to overheating. Water temperatures consistently above 26°C can decrease their lifespan considerably.
