Tiger Barb
Puntigrus tetrazona
The Striped Terrorist (2.5 inches / 6-7 cm). The Tiger Barb is incredibly striking, featuring a golden-orange body slashed with four deep-black vertical tiger stripes and a blood-red nose. However, it is infamous worldwide as the ultimate 'Fin-Nipper'. It is wildly hyperactive, robust, and bossy. If kept incorrectly, it will ruthlessly terrorize and shred the fins of every other fish in your aquarium.

Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Native to Indonesia (Sumatra and Borneo) and the Malay Peninsula. Inhabits a wide range of habitats, from fast-flowing rivers to oxbows, lakes, and peat swamps with dark waters. It prefers clear, well-oxygenated waters with dense marginal vegetation and bottoms covered with gravel or sand.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Stocky, deep-bodied, laterally compressed Cyprinid with a diamond shape. The mouth lacks barbels. Unlike similar species (such as P. partipentazona), it has exactly 4 well-defined and uninterrupted vertical black bands, hence the name "tetrazona". Reaches a maximum length of about 7 cm (2.8 inches).
Social Behavior: Extremely lively, hyperactive, and notorious for being a fin-nipper if kept in insufficient numbers. Must be strictly kept in large schools (minimum 10-15 specimens). In large groups, they establish a strict internal hierarchy and constant skirmishes among conspecifics distract their attention from other fish in the tank.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Background varies from silver to golden/yellow, crossed by four unmistakable vertical black bands. Dorsal and ventral fins have red edges. Adult males are distinctly more slender and display much more intense coloration, with their "nose" (snout) and pelvic fins turning fiery red. Females are paler with a much rounder abdomen.
Care and observations
Aquarium Setup: Requires aquariums at least 80 cm (30 inches) long to accommodate their darting swimming. Prefers a well-planted tank on the sides and back, but with plenty of open swimming space centrally. A dark substrate and not too intense lighting help calm the school. Excellent presence of wood and a gentle current provided by the filter.
Diet and Feeding: Very voracious omnivore. In the wild, it feeds on insects, algal detritus, and small crustaceans. In the aquarium, it eagerly accepts anything: flakes, micro-pellets, live or frozen food (bloodworms, brine shrimp). To maintain bright colors and good digestion, it is essential to supplement the diet with vegetable components (Spirulina, blanched vegetables).
Water Quality: Hardy and adaptable fish, but demands clean water. Prefers temperatures between 23.0 and 28.0 °C (73-82 °F). The ideal pH is between 6.0 and 7.5, while hardness (GH) can vary from 4.0 to 15.0. Poor water hygiene or nitrate spikes make it lethargic and vulnerable to bacterial infections.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Complex pairing. Never pair it with shy, slow fish, or those with long fins (Bettas, Angelfish, Gouramis, Guppies), which would be relentlessly harassed. Excellent coexistence with equally fast and robust fish (Danios, Rasboras, large Tetras), Loaches (like Macracanthus), and large Corydoras. If the Barb school is large, the harassment level drops drastically.
Aquarium Reproduction: Prolific spawner. Scatters adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants at first light after lively chases. The parents are avid devourers of their own eggs: to save the offspring it is necessary to set up a separate tank with a protective net on the bottom or remove the adults immediately after spawning.
Risks and Diseases: Generally very hardy. However, the tendency to overeat can cause constipation and swim bladder problems (evident if the fish swims "head down"). Stress from too small schools quickly leads to an immune collapse with the appearance of Ich (Ichthyophthirius).
Fish profile
- Temperament
- Vivacissimo, Rissoso e Gerarchico (Teppista Fin-Nipper). Insetti sociali in perenne moto. Letale per pesci statici.
- Diet
- Onnivoro Famelico e Voracissimo (Spazzino d'Acqua). Sono ingordi all'estremo.

- Sex ratio
- Branco Numeroso Assoluto (Minimo Indispensabile: 10-12, Ottimale: 15-20).
- Feeding frequency
- 1-2 volte al dì. Attenzione all'iper-nutrizione.
Tasso parentale nullo.
- Compatibility
Compagni ottimi: Pesci rudi e tozzi rapidi e resistenti asiatici come Labeo, Squali d'acqua dolce (Balantiocheilus), Botia Giganti e Rasbore enormi irraggiungibili.
