Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to South America, specifically the Amazon River basin and river systems of Guyana. Found in slow-moving streams and vegetated tributaries.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Classified within the Characidae family. Features a slender, laterally compressed body, characteristic of small characins, with a distinct dark lateral band.

Social Behavior: Schooling species that must be kept in groups of at least 6-8 individuals to ensure security and natural swimming behavior.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Silvery-grey body with a prominent black horizontal stripe running from the operculum to the caudal fin. Males are slimmer and slightly more colorful.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Provide a well-planted aquarium with open swimming areas and floating plants to diffuse the light.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Readily accepts dry flakes and pellets, along with regular feeding of frozen brine shrimp and daphnia.

Water Quality: Best kept in soft, slightly acidic water. Temperature should range between 22-28°C.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Peaceful community fish, ideal for housing with other small tetras, rasboras, and dwarf cichlids.

Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. Requires a separate spawning tank with fine-leaved plants and low lighting.

Risks and Diseases: Prone to Ich (white spot disease) if subjected to sudden temperature drops or poor water maintenance.
