Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the Teles Pires River basin in Brazil. Inhabits clear, slow-flowing forest streams with abundant submerged root structures.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Described in 2016. Features a deep, laterally compressed body. Adults reach a length of 3.5 to 4.5 cm.
Social Behavior: Active and social schooling fish. It occupies the midwater layers of the tank and must be kept in groups of at least 8 to display its natural schooling movements.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Displays a unique, iridescent blueberry-purple color under good lighting. Males show deeper color saturation, while females are plumper.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: An aquarium of at least 75 liters with a balance of open swimming space and planted areas. Driftwood and leaf litter help mimic their natural habitat.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Readily accepts dry flakes and pellets. Offer frozen brine shrimp or daphnia regularly to support energy levels and color.
Water Quality: Keep pH between 5.5 and 7.5, and GH between 2 and 12. Regular partial water changes are essential to keep nitrate levels low.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Ideal for peaceful community tanks. Good tankmates include other tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and dwarf cichlids.
Aquarium Breeding: Egg-scatterer. Scatter eggs over fine-leaved plants. Breeding is successful in soft, acidic water with low lighting.
Risks and Diseases: Known jump risk. Make sure the tank has a tight lid to prevent any escapes.
