Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the coastal river basins of Ecuador, including the Esmeraldas River system. Found in slow-flowing streams and shallow margins with dense vegetation.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the genus Hyphessobrycon in the Characidae family. Features a laterally compressed body shape and a small adipose fin. Grows to about 4.5 cm in length.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and highly gregarious. A classic schooling species that must be kept in a group of 8-10 or more to exhibit natural active behaviors.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Silvery body with bluish-green iridescence along the back and a dark humeral spot. Males are generally smaller, slimmer, and slightly more colorful than mature females.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: An aquarium of at least 80 liters is recommended. Provide dense plantings, driftwood roots, and a dark substrate to mimic their natural shady stream habitat.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Readily accepts high-quality flakes and micro-pellets. Supplement with small live or frozen foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp for optimal health.
Water Quality: Prefers soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Maintain water temperature at 23-27 °C, pH 6.0-7.5, and hardness at 2-12 dGH.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Ideal for peaceful community tanks. Suitable tankmates include other small tetras, rasboras, corydoras catfish, and peaceful dwarf cichlids.
Aquarium Breeding: Egg scatterer. Requires a separate breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Parents should be removed immediately after spawning to prevent egg predation.
Risks and Diseases: Prone to common freshwater diseases like ich if subjected to sudden temperature fluctuations or poor water maintenance.
