Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Originating from the Essequibo River basin and rivers of Guyana (South America). Found in slow forest streams and brooks (both black and clear waters), among dense accumulations of organic matter and submerged foliage.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Dawn Tetra (Hyphessobrycon eos). The scientific name "eos", meaning dawn in Greek, alludes to its warm reflective colors. Has a moderately stocky and tall shape, typical of the Hyphessobrycon genus.
Social Behavior: Very peaceful and sociable, to be strictly kept in schools of a minimum of 8-10 individuals. Within the group, males establish peaceful hierarchical skirmishes by fully spreading their fins to intimidate each other.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: "Dawn colored" livery: brilliant golden-yellow or orange base, with coppery hues under appropriate lighting, especially near the base of the tail. Adult males are noticeably more colorful and slender than females (larger and swollen).
Care and observations
Aquarium Setup: 60 cm (24 inches) tank. It will display the best colors in a "blackwater" style aquarium with abundant catappa leaves, alder cones, intricate wood, and dim light (shielded by floating plants).
Diet and Feeding: Generalist omnivore and micro-predator. Very easy to feed: accepts high-quality crushed flake or micro-pellet foods. Provide live or frozen food (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms) multiple times a week.
Water Quality: Not particularly demanding like other wild species, but appreciates soft (GH 1-10) and weakly acidic to neutral waters (pH 5.5-7.0). Sensitive to excess nitrogen and nitrates (perform regular water changes).
Compatibility and Tankmates: A perfect companion for almost all peaceful South American community fish. Ideal with Nannostomus, Carnegiella, Corydoras, Ancistrus, and Dwarf Cichlids (Apistogramma, Mikrogeophagus).
Aquarium Reproduction: Free egg scatterer. Under conditions of soft water and rich feeding, they spawn among plants (Java Moss). Essential to remove parents after spawning to protect the hundreds of eggs produced.
Risks and Diseases: Vulnerable to wasting in recently setup (un-cycled) aquariums and easily stressed in bare environments, completely losing its typical golden hue ("stress coloration").
