Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the upper Amazon basin in Peru. Found in fast-flowing, highly oxygenated forest streams.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Known as Boehlkea fredcochui. Features an elongated body and a striking blue coloration. Grows to 4-5.5 cm.

Social Behavior: Highly active, schooling fish. May engage in fin-nipping if kept in too small a group or restricted space.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Possesses a brilliant metallic blue body. Males display more vibrant colors, while females are rounder in body shape.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Long tank (100 liters minimum) is necessary to accommodate their fast swimming. Keep plants along the edges and open space in the middle.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Gladly takes flakes, pellets, and frozen foods. Live food feeds will help maintain their bright blue colors.

Water Quality: pH 5.5 - 7.0, GH 2 - 15. Requires highly oxygenated water with moderate flow and clean conditions.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Keep with fast-moving, robust species. Do not house with slow-moving or long-finned fish (like Bettas or Guppies) to prevent fin-nipping.

Aquarium Breeding: Egg-scatterer. Difficult to breed due to the parents' egg-eating behavior. Use a separate breeding tank with spawning mesh.

Risks and Diseases: Extreme jump risk due to high activity and speed. A tight-fitting lid is absolutely mandatory.
