Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Broadly distributed in the Paraná and Paraguay River basins, and parts of the Amazon. Inhabits shallow, slow-moving rivers, marshes, and flooded areas.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Classified in the Characidae family. Features an elongated body with an upturned mouth adapted for surface feeding.

Social Behavior: Very active schooling fish. Keeps well in groups of 6 or more, showing active, fast-paced swimming patterns near the surface.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Silvery-grey iridescent body, featuring red-orange fins and a bright golden-yellow spot on the tail base. Males are slimmer and more brightly colored.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Long tank with plenty of open swimming space at the top. Secure lid is mandatory as they are highly prone to jumping.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Feeds near the water surface. Readily accepts floating flakes, pellets, and freeze-dried or frozen daphnia.

Water Quality: Highly adaptable to varying water conditions. Prefers a pH between 6.0-7.5 and temperature of 22-27°C.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Peaceful community fish, best housed with other active species like barbs, danios, and bottom-dwelling catfish.

Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. Disperses eggs in the water column; adult fish should be removed immediately after spawning.

Risks and Diseases: Very hardy. The main hazard is their jumping behavior when startled or during water changes.
