Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Does not exist in nature. The GloFish Tetra is a genetically modified organism (GMO) created in the laboratory by inserting fluorescent genes derived from jellyfish (for green) or corals (for red) into the genome of the wild Gymnocorymbus ternetzi.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Fluorescent Tetra (GloFish Tetra). The morphology is identical to that of the Black Skirt Tetra: high and rhomboidal body, very extensive anal fin. However, due to severe inbreeding in commercial farms, they are often slightly smaller (max 6 cm / 2.3 inches) and deformed.

Social Behavior: Maintains the gregarious and extremely hyperactive nature of the wild ancestor. Must be kept in dense schools (minimum 6-8 specimens). Unfortunately, if kept in tanks that are too small, they show severe intraspecific aggression and bite the fins of others.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Shocking. The colors (Starfire Red, Electric Green, Sunburst Orange, Cosmic Blue, Galactic Purple) are intrinsic, not injected, and are passed down genetically. They stand out blindingly under actinic blue LED lights. Females are larger and rounder.

Care and observations

Aquarium Setup: Despite their "toy" appearance, they need a REAL aquarium of at least 80 cm (32 inches). Commercial "GloFish kits" (10-liter spheres) are death traps. Free space in the center for frantic swimming. Lid mandatory.

Diet and Feeding: Very voracious and omnivorous. They instantly devour any flake or granular feed. To keep their immune system healthy (often compromised by inbreeding), regularly supplement with frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp.

Water Quality: They inherit the robustness of the wild Tetra, but not its longevity. They tolerate pH 6.0-7.5, GH 3-15 and temperatures of 22-26°C (71-79°F). They react very badly to nitrite and ammonia spikes, frequent in the small children's aquariums where they are often relegated.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Perfect companions for Corydoras or peaceful bottom fish. NEVER pair them with slow fish with long fins (Betta Splendens, male Guppies), as they are unstoppable "fin-nippers" and would leave them finless in a few days.

Aquarium Reproduction: They scatter eggs among the plants. They breed as easily as the wild form, generating fry that are already fluorescent. LEGAL NOTE: in many countries (including Europe) the sale, possession and breeding of these GMOs is strictly illegal.

Risks and Diseases: Ethically controversial fish. They chronically suffer from spinal malformations, tumors, early blindness and have a much shorter life expectancy (1-2 years) compared to the wild strain (5+ years), due to the lack of genetic diversity in the breeding farms.
