Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the upper Amazon basin in Peru, Brazil, and Colombia. Commonly inhabits slow-flowing tributaries and flooded forest areas.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Classified within the Characidae family. Features a deeper, more robust body profile compared to many other Hemigrammus species.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and highly gregarious. Must be kept in a group of 6 or more to ensure their well-being and cohesive schooling behavior.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Olive-green back with iridescent scales, a bright orange-copper blotch on the caudal peduncle, and a dark spot beneath it. Females are noticeably rounder when gravid.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: A well-planted aquarium with dark substrate, driftwood, and floating plants to create comfortable shaded areas.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Readily consumes high-quality dry foods, and appreciates frozen foods like daphnia, cyclops, and bloodworms.
Water Quality: Highly adaptable, but thrives in soft, acidic to neutral water (pH 5.0-7.0) with clean water parameters.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Ideal for community tanks, associating well with other tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and peaceful dwarf cichlids.
Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. Spawns easily in a separate tank with soft water, low light, and spawning grass or mop.
Risks and Diseases: Generally hardy, but susceptible to common freshwater diseases like Ich if stressed or exposed to poor water conditions.
