Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to Brazil, found in the upper basins of the Rio Tocantins and Rio Guaporé. It inhabits forest streams and tributaries with dense marginal vegetation.

Taxonomy and Morphology: A member of the Characidae family. Features an elongated, slightly compressed body, reaching up to 6.0 cm. It is known for its distinctive oblique swimming posture, with the head tilted upwards.

Social Behavior: An active, peaceful, and shoaling species. Needs to be kept in a group of at least 6-8 individuals to allow proper social structure and reduce stress.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Silvery body with a solid black stripe running from behind the gill cover down to the tip of the lower tail lobe. Dimorphism is subtle; mature females are slightly rounder.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: An 80-liter tank is recommended. Arrange tall plants along the back and sides to provide cover, leaving the center open for active swimming. Driftwood branches are suitable decorations.

Diet and Feeding: Easy to feed. Accepts high-quality dry foods, supplemented with frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms to maintain health and color.

Water Quality: Highly adaptable. Temperature should be maintained between 22°C and 28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, and GH 3-12 dGH. Regular partial water changes are essential.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Great community fish. Suitable tankmates include other tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and peaceful dwarf cichlids. Avoid very large or aggressive tankmates.

Aquarium Breeding: Spawning occurs among fine-leaved plants. Parents should be removed immediately to prevent them from eating the eggs. Fry hatch in about 24 hours.

Risks and Diseases: Generally a robust species. Like other tetras, they can jump if frightened, so keep the tank well-covered.
