Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to northern Myanmar, in the drainage systems of the Irrawaddy River. Found in cool, well-oxygenated hill streams with gravelly beds.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the Cyprinidae family. Features a streamlined body, reaching a maximum length of 3.5 cm.

Social Behavior: Exceptionally active, peaceful, and schooling. Occupies all areas of the water column. Must be kept in a school of 8 or more to prevent stress.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Showcases brilliant orange-red body colors with vertical dark bars and a glowing golden lateral line. Males are smaller and show much brighter colors than females.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: An 80-liter tank with decent length is required. Provide moderate to strong water flow to simulate their natural stream environment. A secure lid is mandatory.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Readily accepts flakes, micropellets, and frozen foods such as daphnia and cyclops. Feed small amounts twice daily.

Water Quality: Prefers cool, clean, and highly oxygenated water. Maintain water temperature at 20-26 °C, pH at 6.0-7.5, and hardness at 2-12 dGH.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Ideal for active community tanks. Suitable tankmates include other danios, rasboras, and small loaches. Avoid slow-moving long-finned tankmates.

Aquarium Breeding: Egg scatterer. Egg-laying is often triggered by morning sunlight. Remove adults immediately after spawning to protect the eggs.

Risks and Diseases: Exceptional jumping ability requires a fully covered aquarium. Vulnerable to stress if kept in stagnant, low-oxygen waters.
