Panda Cory

Corydoras panda

The Panda Cory (*Corydoras panda*) is absolutely one of the cutest and most loved bottom-dwelling fish in the aquarium hobby. Its common name is the perfect description of its aesthetics: it has a light body adorned with an unmistakable black mask over the eyes and a large dark spot on the caudal peduncle, reminiscent of the famous Chinese bear. Slightly smaller than the average classic Corydoras (reaching 4.5 cm / 1.8 inches), the Panda is a tireless and lively benthic explorer, ideal for peaceful cool-water aquariums.

Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: High-altitude species, endemic to the Huánuco region in Peru (Ucayali river system, at the foothills of the Andes). Inhabits fast-flowing, oxygen-rich crystalline Andean streams characterized by unusually cool water due to mountain snowmelt.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Known as the Panda Corydoras (Panda Cory). Typically stocky body, with a maximum length of 5 cm (2 inches). The lateral bony scutes provide its typical defensive armor. Sensitive and short downward-facing barbels for rooting around.

Social Behavior: Very lively fish, constantly moving on the bottom in search of nourishment. It has a sociable, timid, and highly gregarious temperament: always keep in schools of at least 6-8 individuals. It is one of the most active corydoras during daylight hours.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Unmistakable and beloved "panda" livery: pale silvery-pink or light sand-colored body, marked by three unmistakable black spots: a mask over the eyes, a large patch on the caudal peduncle, and an almost entirely black dorsal fin. Females are larger and broader.

Care and observations

Aquarium Setup: Aquarium of at least 60-80 cm (24-30 inches) in length. Essential is a fine sand (sugar-sized) flooring to protect its whiskers. Create many shaded areas with driftwood, Anubias, and Ferns. Requires a very strong water flow and surface movement to saturate the water with oxygen.

Diet and Feeding: Tireless omnivorous detritivore. Feeds by scavenging the bottom. Requires a specific diet based on sinking wafers formulated for bottom-dwelling fish, enriched with baby brine shrimp, mysis, frozen bloodworms, or freeze-dried foods, combined with a vegetable percentage.

Water Quality: TEMPERATURE IS CRITICAL: suffers if kept over 25°C (77°F) for extended periods. The ideal range is between 20°C and 24°C (68-75°F), making it unsuitable for Symphysodon (Discus) tanks. Neutral-acidic pH (6.0 - 7.4), low hardness. Regular water changes with cool water are recommended.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Ideal for unheated community aquariums or those at constant room temperature (22°C / 72°F). Excellent together with Danios (e.g., Danio rerio), Neons, White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Otocinclus, and Neocaridina shrimp. Avoid large fish, Central American Cichlids, and fish that require high temperatures.

Aquarium Reproduction: Spawns abundantly in the presence of temperature drops (cold water changes) that simulate Andean snowmelt. Spawning occurs with the "T-position". Eggs are glued to vegetation or glass (often near filter flow). Parents are predators of their own fry.

Risks and Diseases: The most serious problems arise from keeping them in water that is too warm (26°C+ / 79°F+), which depresses the immune system causing bacterial infections (Columnaris), mycosis, and barbel wear due to unsuitable substrates. Extreme sensitivity to marine salt and copper sulfate.

Sex ratio
Gruppi misti senza problemi.
Compatibility
Ottimi con piccoli caracidi (Neon, Cardinali), Rasbore, e altri pesci d'acqua moderatamente fresca. Evitare grossi Ciclidi e Botia aggressivi.
