Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Endemic to the Pastaza River basin and upper tributaries in Peru (Upper Amazon basin). Frequents forested areas with small marginal streams, oxbows, tannin-rich black water, and muddy bottoms mixed with very fine sand and vegetable debris.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the large Callichthyidae family. Short-snouted stocky Corydoras, adult size of about 5 cm (2 inches). As with many related Peruvian "spotted" species, visual taxonomic identification is historically difficult if lacking geographic certification of origin.

Social Behavior: Very peaceful, shy, bottom-dwelling species. Manifests severe discomfort and stress if isolated. Keeping in schools (minimum 6-8 specimens) allows observation of their bottom-patrolling dynamics, which occur as a single, compact moving flock.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: "Spotted" livery: the light silver-beige body is densely covered with dark punctate spots. A massive circular or "D" shaped black spot dominates the posterior and upper part of the dorsal fin. Dimorphism visible at reproductive age: females significantly more corpulent and round.

Care and observations

Aquarium Setup: Substrate imperatively sandy (fine silica sand); the use of gravel is categorically precluded. A dark Amazonian biotope with amber-tinting woods and floating cover is recommended. Subdued lighting supports their gregarious behavior and reduces their tendency to stay in the shade.

Diet and Feeding: Micro-predatory detritivore. Fundamental is the supply of specific sinking tablets or wafers and a weekly contribution of live/frozen food (brine shrimp, daphnia, tubifex). The erroneous belief that they eat "dirt" must be eradicated to prevent death by wasting.

Water Quality: Demands chemical stability and pollutants close to zero. Temperatures 22-26°C (72-79°F). Very soft hardness (GH 2-12) and pH 6.0-7.2. Correct oxygenation and superficial siphoning of the substrate to remove rotting waste are essential.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Ideal choice for peaceful community aquariums. Can be successfully introduced together with Tetras (Neons, Cardinals), Hatchetfish, and small Loricariids. Coexistence is at risk with dwarf Cichlids or large bottom grazers that will compete with and frighten the corydoras during feeding.

Aquarium Reproduction: Common reproductive model: stimulated by providing abundant live prey and introducing mild thermal shocks (cold water during water changes simulating the onset of the monsoon). They lay dozens of adhesive eggs on the glass or plants. Parents are highly predatory of the brood.

Risks and Diseases: Abrasions to the barbels due to abrasive substrates result in lethal septicemia or starvation (losing the sensory ability to find food). Extreme intolerance, common to all Callichthyidae, to treatments with copper or sodium chloride.
