Description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: South America: Paru River basin, in the state of Pará, Brazil. Mainly frequents small streams within the primary forest, with heavy shading and substrates rich in decomposing dead leaves and submerged branches.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the Callichthyidae family. A medium-sized, stocky Corydoras, reaching 5 cm (2 inches). Short and rounded snout profile. Belongs to a group of phenotypically very similar Corydoras originating from the Amazon basin, often difficult for non-experts to identify.

Social Behavior: Typical gregariousness. Peaceful, tireless searcher on the bottom, prefers to move in small cohesive schools of at least 6 or more individuals to feel protected. Tends to rest in the shade of large roots during peak lighting hours.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Light background, cream-grayish, characterized by a wide black longitudinal band running laterally across the flank. The dorsal fin has irregular black speckles. Mature females have a noticeably stockier build and a markedly convex abdominal profile.

Care and observations

Aquarium Setup: Substrate imperatively in fine sand (without it, the fish will waste away). Create an amber environment (blackwater) by inserting alder cones, oak or Ketapang leaves, and roots to provide shaded areas. Dense lateral planting and surface floaters to lower light intensity.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous detritivore. In the wild, it sifts the mud looking for annelids, small benthic crustaceans, and organic material. Provide specific Corydoras tablets that sink rapidly, alternated with live or frozen foods (Artemia and Tubifex or Bloodworms) to ensure vitality and robustness.

Water Quality: Demands excellent chemical conditions. Sensitive to high nitrate levels caused by decomposing feeds. Optimal thermal range: 22-26°C (72-79°F), pH 6.0 - 7.2 (tends to prefer more acidic and humic-rich waters compared to common store Corydoras). Medium-low hardness.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Totally peaceful, it is the quintessence of the fish for the tranquil Amazonian community aquarium. Optimal tankmates: gregarious Tetras (Nannostomus, Hyphessobrycon), Loricariids (Otocinclus), and small Cichlids (e.g., Biotoecus, Apistogramma) if the tank offers sufficient vital space on the bottom.

Aquarium Reproduction: Rarely documented in the hobby due to the scarcity of the species. Similar to other species of the genus: requires a sudden drop in temperature (with cool reverse osmosis water) and high atmospheric pressure. Lays single adhesive eggs on vegetation or glass.

Risks and Diseases: Vulnerable to the irreversible wear of delicate tactile barbels if housed on sharp gravel or rough fertilized substrates. High sensitivity to secondary fungal pathologies in case of wounds or bites inflicted by other fish on the bottom.
