- Convict cichlids are highly aggressive and territorial, making them generally unsuitable for community aquariums. They should ideally be kept in a species-only tank, particularly if breeding is intended, as they will violently attack any tank mates. If kept in a very large setup, they can be housed with other robust Central American cichlids of similar size and temperament, such as Firemouths or Salvini cichlids. Invertebrates like dwarf shrimp or snails will likely be eaten or harassed and should be avoided.
