Flavescent Peacock / Stuartgrant's Peacock
Aulonocara stuartgranti
The quintessential 'Peacock' of Lake Malawi. Males are living fireworks (13 cm / 5 inches), flashing neon blue heads with blazing yellow, orange, or copper bodies. Much more peaceful and manageable than standard rock cichlids, they use unique sonar pores on their heads to hunt in the sand.

Description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Endemic to Lake Malawi. This species/variant complex is spread along almost the entire north-western and eastern coast of the lake. Lives in the sandy zone immediately adjacent to rocky cliffs, rarely descending below 20 meters (65 feet).
Taxonomy and Morphology: Flavescent Peacock / Stuartgranti Peacock (Aulonocara stuartgranti). Named after export pioneer Stuart Grant. It is the classic prototype of the Malawi "Peacock", with its typical skull conformation equipped with sensors to "listen" to the sand.
Social Behavior: Moderate and relatively peaceful (by Malawi standards). The male defends a visual radius on the sand adjacent to a rock, but rarely engages in deadly fights. Females form peaceful and gregarious schools that patrol the bottom.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Incredibly variable depending on the geographical "Morph" (Ngara, Chilumba, Cobue). Often males show bright sapphire blue heads with golden or reddish bodies and white-striped fins. Females are consistently a "mouse" gray-brown.
Care and observations
Aquarium Setup: 120-150 cm (48-60 inches) tank. Create a clear division: half tank with a large cliff of limestone rocks for shelters, and the remaining half left as a free clearing with very fine sand (aragonite or fine quartz) to allow natural foraging.
Diet and Feeding: Sifting micro-predator. In nature it chews the sand expelling it from the gills to retain crustaceans. In the aquarium it should be fed with protein sinking micro-pellets, brine shrimp and daphnia. Avoid floating flake foods.
Water Quality: Demands classic Rift conditions: very alkaline and hard water. Being a benthic sifter, it suffers terribly from debris accumulations on the bottom: meticulous weekly siphoning of the sand is essential for its health.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Cohabits well with Cichlids of the "Haps" group (e.g. Placidochromis, Protomelas) or peaceful Labidochromis. Absolutely AVOID aggressive Mbuna (Zebra, Melanochromis) and never mix with other male Aulonocara stuartgranti to prevent bloodbaths.
Aquarium Reproduction: Typical mouthbrooder. Reproduction takes place on the sand (T-position). The female will hold the eggs for 3-4 weeks. If stressed by overly lively tankmates, the female may spit the eggs or swallow them prematurely.
Risks and Diseases: Very high risk of hybridization: males of different variants (e.g. Ngara and Chilumba) will mate indiscriminately with any gray Aulonocara female, irremediably ruining the genetic purity of the line.
Fish profile
- Temperament

- Compatibility
- Convivenza Delicata (Haplochromis Tank).
