Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Endemic to deep, steep limestone reefs of Rarotonga (Cook Islands) in the south-central Pacific. Inhabits caves and rubble slopes at depths of 55 to over 120 meters, where temperatures are significantly cooler than at the surface.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacanthidae. Described in 1992, it possesses a deep, highly compressed body shape. A small pygmy angelfish reaching a maximum size of only 7.5 cm.
Social Behavior: Secretive and solitary, occasionally seen in pairs. Spends its life within or near deep caves, navigating closely along rock faces.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Instantly recognizable by its alternating vertical bands of bright red-orange and snow-white. The face is yellow. No visible sexual dimorphism is noted.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a specialized cool-water setup of at least 100 liters, chilled to 18–22°C (64–72°F). Subdued or mesophotic-level lighting is necessary. Abundant rockwork for hiding places is essential.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivore. Naturally feeds on sponges, detritus, and algae. In captivity, it requires high-quality frozen foods like mysis, brine shrimp, calanus, and sponge-enriched angelfish diets fed multiple times daily.
Water Quality: Demands pristine water quality and stable parameters. Temperature 18–22°C, pH 8.1–8.4, salinity SG 1.020–1.025, GH 15–25, and KH 8–12. High sensitivity to water quality fluctuations.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Best kept alone or with extremely passive, cool-water tankmates. Standard tropical species are incompatible due to the low-temperature requirements.
Aquarium Reproduction: Undocumented in captivity. Broadcast spawners in their natural habitat.
Risks and Diseases: Elevated temperatures will cause rapid mortality. Highly prone to skin infections and marine ich if stressed. Wild-caught individuals face high risk of decompression sickness (bends) if not harvested with extreme care.
