Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Indian Ocean, endemic to the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Persian Gulf. Inhabits shallow sandy reef flats and coastal lagoons at depths of 1 to 25 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Balistidae. Features a robust, leathery body with strong jaws and sharp teeth. Grows up to 30 cm in length. Lockable dorsal spine.

Social Behavior: Bold, highly aggressive, and territorial. Known to bite and rearranges decorations. Can show intense aggression toward other triggerfish.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body features a complex array of blue, black, yellow, and white lines across the eyes and head, with a yellow-orange tail band. No sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Minimum aquarium volume of 400 liters. Rockwork must be secure and heavy. Provide open space for active swimming.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivore. Provide hard-shelled clams, shrimp, chopped squid, krill, and seaweed. Hard food is essential to wear down its teeth. Feed 2 times daily.

Water Quality: Strong filtration and active protein skimming are essential. Maintain temperature at 22-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.025.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Not reef-safe. Will eat crustaceans, snails, urchins, and corals. Combine only with larger, robust species.

Aquarium Breeding: Not bred in home aquaria. Guards benthic nests on sandy substrates in the wild.

Risks and Diseases: Very hardy. High jumping risk. Protect all exposed wires and heaters from its strong teeth.
