Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Tropical Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to the Hawaiian Islands, north to southern Japan. Inhabits deep outer reef slopes between 20 and 40 meters deep.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Balistidae. Reaches a maximum size of 30 cm. Typical morphology of the genus Xanthichthys, with an elongated fusiform body and eyes positioned high on the head.

Social Behavior: Unusually peaceful temperament for a triggerfish. Constantly swims in the water column hunting for planktonic food, showing minimal aggression toward differently sized tankmates.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Clear sexual dimorphism. Males feature a bright electric-blue patch under their throat and fins bordered with bright yellow. Females lack the blue patch and have plain gray or dark fins.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Needs a spacious aquarium of at least 470 liters (125 gallons), with plenty of open swimming space and rocks arranged with caves for shelter.

Diet and Feeding: Planktonic carnivore. In the aquarium, it prefers mysis, krill, brine shrimp, and small pieces of shrimp or squid offered regularly.

Water Quality: Requires efficient filtration and moderate water movement. pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, temperature 23-27°C (73-82°F).

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Considered the ideal triggerfish for reef tanks (Reef Safe). Does not damage corals and coexists peacefully with most fish, except very small ornamental shrimp.

Aquarium Breeding: No documented breeding success in home aquariums due to their complex pelagic larval stage.

Risks and Diseases: Known to jump if startled, making a tight lid or screen top mandatory. Pay attention to proper acclimation.
