Species description
Geographic Origin and Biotope: Widespread in the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii and the Tuamotu Islands, north to southern Japan, and south to the Great Barrier Reef. Inhabits coastal reefs and lagoons down to 55 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the genus Canthigaster. Small species, growing to a maximum of 10 cm (4 inches). Features a round body, fused teeth forming a beak, and scaleless skin containing tetrodotoxin.
Social Behavior: Semi-aggressive. Territorial, living in stable pairs or small harems. Slow-moving, hovering swimmer that closely inspects the rockwork.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is light greyish-white covered with brown dots, marked by four prominent black bars or saddles across the back. Fins are translucent with yellow and blue tinges. No visible sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 120 liters with plenty of live rock arranged to create crevices and caves. Robust filtration is required as they are messy eaters.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous/Carnivorous. Must be fed hard-shelled foods (snails, small crabs, unshelled krill, frozen brine) to wear down its constantly growing beak. Include nori, spirulina, and sponge-based foods.
Water Quality: Hardy, but sensitive to high nitrates. Standard parameters: temperature 24-26°C (75-79°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, GH 15-25, and KH 8-12.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Reef-safe with caution. Notorious for nipping the fins of slow-moving fish (like firefish or mandarin fish) and biting stony coral polyps, zoanthids, and ornamental shrimp. Keep with active tankmates.
Aquarium Reproduction: Occasional in home tanks. Demersal spawners laying eggs on algae or sand. Larvae are pelagic and difficult to raise.
Risks and Diseases: Highly toxic if eaten (tetrodotoxin). Can inflate with water or air if threatened. Never remove from water using a net; always use a solid cup.
