Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to Hawaii. Found in sandy lagoons, estuaries, and reef slopes down to 50 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Tetraodontidae. Grows up to 50 cm. Scaleless, rounded body covered with small prickles.
Social Behavior: Solitary and territorial. Highly intelligent, recognizes keepers and actively interacts.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Greenish-brown to dark gray background covered with small white spots and rings around the eyes. No dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Large custom tank of at least 800 liters (210 gallons) to house an adult comfortably.
Diet and Feeding: Heavy carnivorous diet. Must be fed whole clams, mussels, crabs, shrimp, and urchins to grind teeth.
Water Quality: High organic waste producer. Demands heavy skimming and regular water changes.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Only for large fish-only setups with robust tankmates (tangs, groupers).
Not reef safe:.
Aquarium Breeding: Captive breeding is not documented or feasible in home setups.
Risks and Diseases: Highly toxic (tetrodotoxin). Use plastic containers for moving and handle with thick gloves.
