Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat:
Coral reefs of the Indian Ocean, from the coast of East Africa to Western Sumatra. Found on outer slopes.
Taxonomy and Morphology:
Belongs to the family Chaetodontidae. Possesses a compressed disc-like body. Reaches up to 20 cm.
Social Behavior:
Shy and peaceful. Found living solitary or in stable monogamous pairs in reef zones.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism:
Grayish-white body with thin dark lines, yellow-orange head, dorsal, and anal fins. No dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup:
Minimum of 350 liters (90 gallons) with established live rock for foraging and shelter.
Diet and Feeding:
Specialized feeder. Consumes coral polyps and algae. Demands high-quality frozen foods and vitamins.
Water Quality:
Requires clean water conditions, efficient protein skimming, and stable salinity.
Compatibility and Cohabitation:
Keep with peaceful tankmates.
Not reef safe as it will feed directly on corals.
Aquarium Breeding:
Undocumented in home aquariums; pelagic spawners in nature.
Risks and Diseases:
Very prone to starvation and skin parasites like cryptocaryon if stressed.
