Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Tropical Indo-Pacific: from East Africa and the Red Sea to Fiji, north to southern Japan. Inhabits shallow weedy lagoons, estuaries, and seagrass beds down to 10 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Blenniidae, tribe Nemophini. Features long, sharp saber-like canine teeth in the lower jaw, which are non-venomous but very sharp. Grows up to 11 cm.
Social Behavior: Curious and vigilant. Swims in midwater among macroalgae and often uses empty mollusk shells or abandoned pipes as a home base, sticking its head out to survey the tank.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Grey-silver or light brown body with longitudinal black and yellow faded stripes. A distinctive blue-black spot decorates the anterior dorsal fin. Males are slightly larger.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Demands an aquarium of at least 150 liters with live rock, macroalgae, and empty snail shells. A tight-fitting lid is mandatory as the species is a frequent jumper.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivore. Feeds on small crustaceans, zooplankton, and algae. Readily accepts frozen brine shrimp, mysis, copepods, and vitamin-enriched herbivore pellets.
Water Quality: Keep parameters stable. Temperature 25-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.026. GH 15-25. Efficient filtration helps maintain crystal clear water.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef safe with caution. May bite or nip the fins of slow-moving or long-finned fish (such as lionfish) if they approach its shelter. Keep singly.
Aquarium Breeding: Occasional spawning in aquariums. Lays adhesive eggs inside shells or cracks, which are guarded fiercely by the male.
Risks and Diseases: Primary risk is jumping from uncovered aquariums. Handle carefully: the sharp canine teeth can deliver a painful bite to aquarists.
