Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Pacific: distributed along eastern Australia (New South Wales, Queensland), New Caledonia, and the Solomon Islands. Inhabits seagrass beds, sheltered harbors, and mixed rocky-muddy reef areas down to 15 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Blenniidae, genus Petroscirtes. Features long, curved, non-venomous saber-like canine teeth in the lower jaw. Reaches up to 13 cm.

Social Behavior: Solitary, occupying crevices or empty shells. It is vigilant and territorial over its shelter, frequently swimming in midwater to patrol.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Elongated light brown or greyish body, characterized by interrupted dark longitudinal stripes and irregular blotches. Spawning males show more intense colors.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Demands an aquarium of at least 150 liters with live rock and macroalgae. A secure lid is mandatory as it will jump if startled.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivore. Consumes benthic algae, small crustaceans, and mysis. In captivity, accepts frozen, pellet, and vegetable flake foods. Feed twice daily.

Water Quality: Keep parameters stable. Temperature 21-28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.026. GH 15-25. Regular water changes are recommended.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef safe with caution. Peaceful with most tankmates, but may bite slow-moving fish or bottom competitors. Keep singly.

Aquarium Breeding: Rare in the hobby. Spawns adhesive eggs inside shells or rock cracks, which are guarded by the male.

Risks and Diseases: High jumping risk. Exercise caution during maintenance: the sharp canine teeth can deliver a painful bite if cornered.
