Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Western Pacific, including the Ryukyu Islands, Palau, and the Great Barrier Reef. Lives in close association with Acropora corals in protected lagoons.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Gobiidae. Small scale-less coral fish covered in a slippery, protective mucus. Extremely small maximum size of about 3.5 cm.

Social Behavior: Peaceful, stationary, and strongly bonded to its host coral. Defends its home coral from other members of the Gobiodon genus.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Beautiful bright green or yellowish body with vertical red-orange lines on the head. Sexual dimorphism is minimal; males can be slightly larger.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a nano reef of at least 40 liters with branching live SPS corals (Acropora) or artificial equivalents. Well-circulated water but without excessive flow.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Feeds on zooplankton. Feed small frozen foods such as copepods, decapsulated brine shrimp, and finely chopped mysis.

Water Quality: Typical reef parameters: temperature 22-27°C, pH 8.0-8.5, salinity 1.020-1.025. Requires clear, well-filtered water.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Perfect for peaceful community nano reefs. May irritate SPS corals by nipping at polyps or using them for nesting sites.

Aquarium Breeding: Bidirectional hermaphrodite. Can lay eggs at the base of coral branches; rearing the fry is highly challenging.

Risks and Diseases: Sensitive to sudden shifts in temperature and salinity. The toxic skin mucus protects it from predators but can be toxic in tiny volumes under severe stress.

Reproduction
