Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Subtropical Eastern Pacific. Inhabits temperate rocky reefs and kelp forests of California and Mexico, down to depths of 70 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Gobiidae. Reaches about 5 cm. Stocky, laterally compressed body with large protruding eyes and rounded dorsal fins.
Social Behavior: Very active bottom-dwelling territorial fish. Famous for its ability to change sex in both directions (bidirectional sex change) depending on group dynamics.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Spectacular bright red or deep orange coloration, crossed by 4 to 9 brilliant vertical electric neon-blue stripes on the front half of the body. Dominant males are larger.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Strictly requires a water chiller to maintain temperature between 16 and 22°C (60-72°F). Prolonged exposure above 24°C (75°F) is lethal.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivore. Feed small frozen foods (mysis, brine shrimp, daphnia). Readily accepts high-quality protein-rich flakes or micro-granules.
Water Quality: Maintain pH 8.0-8.5, specific gravity 1.020-1.025. Needs excellent filtration and regular water changes to prevent nitrogenous waste spikes.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Absolutely peaceful toward fish of other families. Best housed with similar temperate species. Not compatible with tropical reef setups.
Aquarium Breeding: Spawning occurs inside caves or empty shells. The male fiercely defends and constantly fans the clutch until hatching.
Risks and Diseases: Excellent jumper, requires a covered aquarium. The primary risk is thermal decline due to water temperatures too high for its metabolism.
