Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed in the tropical Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Tuamotu Islands. Inhabits shallow lagoons and protected seaward reefs.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Gobiidae, genus Gobiodon. Scaleless, deep body protected by a toxic mucus layer. Reaches about 5 cm in length.

Social Behavior: Highly sedentary, living in symbiosis with branching Acropora corals. Sits on branches and defends its home reef from other gobies.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body is greenish to reddish-brown, adorned with thin vertical wavy blue or red lines on the head and anterior body. Bidirectional hermaphrodites; no stable sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Suitable for nano reefs of at least 40 liters. Branching Acropora corals are required to provide natural shelter.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Feeds on zooplankton and host coral mucus. Provide fine frozen foods like copepods, cyclops, and baby brine shrimp multiple times daily.

Water Quality: Maintain stable reef parameters: temperature 24-28 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity SG 1.020-1.025. Low nutrient levels keep host corals healthy.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Extremely peaceful towards other tankmates. Do not mix with large predators. May cause tissue recession in stressed corals by nipping.

Aquarium Breeding: Monogamous pairs lay adhesive eggs in a circular band around a branch of host coral, after clearing some tissue.

Risks and Diseases: Starvation in newly set up aquariums is common. Resistant to external skin parasites due to its thick, toxic mucus coat.
