Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Restricted to the tropical and subtropical Eastern Pacific, specifically Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and the Galapagos Islands. Inhabits shallow rocky reefs swept by the cool Humboldt Current at depths of 1 to 20 meters.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Pomacentridae, genus Stegastes. Features a robust, oval, and laterally compressed body with large scales. Reaches a maximum size of approximately 15 cm.

Social Behavior: Highly territorial and aggressive. Actively cultivates small algal gardens on rocks, defending them fiercely against any intruders, including much larger fish and divers. Solitary.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Adults are dark grey-brown to blackish with a distinct white or light yellow spot on the caudal peduncle. Spot is brighter and more defined in juveniles. No visible external sexual dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Demands an aquarium of at least 300 liters due to its size and extreme aggressiveness. Provide extensive rockwork structures to form visual barriers. Safe with corals, but prefers cooler water temperatures than classic tropical reef tanks.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous with a heavy herbivorous diet. Feeds on benthic algae and small crustaceans. In captivity, feed twice daily with frozen foods, pellets, and spirulina or marine algae preparations.

Water Quality: Stable parameters: temperature 20-27°C (prefers cooler conditions around 21-24°C), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity (SG) 1.020-1.025, GH 15-25, KH 8-12. Excellent filtration is required.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef safe with corals. Highly discouraged for standard community aquariums. Can only be housed with large, robust tankmates (e.g. large surgeonfishes, triggers). Introduce last to the tank.

Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. Adhesive demersal eggs are laid on rock surfaces and guarded by the male. Captive reproduction is undocumented.

Risks and Diseases: High risk of severe physical injuries inflicted on tankmates due to its aggressive nature. Very hardy species that tolerates environmental changes well.
