Species description

Geographic Origin and Biotope: Tropical Western Pacific, from the Philippines and Indonesia to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Inhabits shallow sandy lagoons and silt-rich coral reefs.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Gobiidae. Commonly known as Rainford's Goby. Features an elongated cylindrical body with a rounded head, reaching a maximum length of about 6.5 cm.

Social Behavior: Docile, peaceful, and mostly solitary. Spends its time sifting through sand and picking at rocks in search of microalgae.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Beautiful orange or greenish body with orange-red longitudinal stripes and small black spots on the dorsal fin and caudal peduncle. Sexual dimorphism is not obvious, though gravid females are rounder.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a tank of at least 80 liters with fine sand substrate (critical for sifting) and mature live rock covered with filamentous algae.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivore. Feeds on filamentous algae and benthic microfauna. Supplement with fine frozen foods like mysis, copepods, and spirulina-based herbivore preparations.

Water Quality: Standard parameters: temperature 22-27°C, pH 8.0-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025. Highly sensitive to nitrate and phosphate build-up.

Compatibility and Tankmates: Very peaceful toward other fish. May exhibit territorial aggression toward same-sex conspecifics in smaller tanks.

Aquarium Reproduction: Rare in captivity. Spawns adhesive eggs in caves or burrows dug under rockwork, actively guarded by the male.

Risks and Diseases: The primary risk is starvation in sterile or overly clean tanks lacking algae and microfauna. Prone to jumping out of open tanks.
