Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Coastal mudflats and mangrove swamps of the northern Indian Ocean, ranging from India to Thailand.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Member of the family Gobiidae. Eyes are set high on the head, providing 360-degree vision. Pectoral fins are muscular and act as legs.
Social Behavior: Highly territorial and aggressive toward conspecifics. Spends more than 90% of its time on land defending its spot.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Speckled brown-grey body with small light dots. The first dorsal fin has a distinct dark submarginal band. No clear dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Aquarium Setup: Must be kept in a paludarium with a 30% water and 70% land split. Use fine sand and sloping wood to provide resting platforms.
Diet and Feeding: Must be fed on land. Accepts live foods such as small crickets, fruit flies, and frozen bloodworms dropped on the dry areas.
Water Quality: Brackish water (salinity 1.005-1.012 SG). High humidity and warm air temperature must be maintained under the hood.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Keep alone or in a very large setup with distinct territories. Do not house with other bottom dwellers.
Aquarium Breeding: Unrecorded in aquariums. In nature, they construct deep, water-filled mud burrows for egg deposition.
Risks and Diseases: Skin drying and respiratory failure occur if the air above water is dry or cold. Tight cover is essential.
