Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the West African coast, inhabiting mangrove swamps, estuaries, and occasionally moving up into freshwater rivers.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Monodactylidae. Features an extremely compressed, diamond-shaped body that is taller than it is long. Reaches up to 25 cm in height.

Social Behavior: Strictly schooling fish. Must be kept in a group of 6 or more to prevent individual bullying and promote natural behavior.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Silvery body crossed by vertical black or dark grey bands. The main band passes through the eye. No external sexual differences.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Requires a very tall and spacious aquarium. Minimal plants (as they eat them), but plenty of open swimming space and hardy driftwood.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. Feed high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods (mysis, krill), and vegetable matter like spirulina flakes.

Water Quality: While juveniles can adapt to freshwater, adults must transition to brackish or full marine conditions to maintain health.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Excellent companion for archerfish, scats, and other active brackish species. Do not keep with slow-moving fish.

Aquarium Breeding: Spawning has not been successfully achieved in home aquariums due to complex environmental requirements.

Risks and Diseases: Susceptible to fin rot if water quality or salinity levels are inadequate for adult fish.
