Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Tropical and subtropical coasts of the Americas. Found in shallow coastal lagoons, estuaries, and mangroves.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Mugilidae. Sleek, fusiform body. It differs from M. cephalus by having larger scales and a shorter snout. Reaches 35 cm.

Social Behavior: Highly social, fast-swimming schooling species. They move together in tight schools across the middle and upper water columns.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Light silver body with olive dorsal coloration and a prominent yellow/gold spot on the opercle. Sessi are identical.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Long tank with minimal decor and soft sand. Ample open area with strong current to simulate natural tide dynamics.

Diet and Feeding: Grazes on benthic algae and detritus. Feed high-quality spirulina flakes, algae wafers, and frozen zooplankton.

Water Quality: Prefers stable brackish water (SG 1.008-1.015) or marine salinities. Excellent filtration is essential.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Great companion for scats and monos. Avoid slow-feeding or easily stressed species.

Aquarium Breeding: Not achieved in captivity due to complex offshore pelagic spawning behaviors.

Risks and Diseases: Major jump risk. A secure, well-sealed lid is required to prevent escapes.
