Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Eastern North American coast. Inhabits salt marshes, tidal creeks, and estuaries, enduring daily environmental spikes.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Fundulidae. Stout, thick-bodied fish with a flattened head and upturned mouth. Grows up to 12 cm.

Social Behavior: Highly active, schooling fish. They forage continuously in groups, patrolling both the bottom mud and water surface.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Dull olive-green body with silver vertical bars. Spawning males develop dark blue coloration and yellow-rimmed fins.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Standard setup with sand or gravel, hardy decor, and space to swim. Artificial plants are recommended in higher salinities.

Diet and Feeding: Opportunistic feeder. Easily accepts flakes, pellets, frozen brine shrimp, and bloodworms. They eat almost anything.

Water Quality: Famous for surviving extreme conditions. Can live in fresh, brackish, or saltwater. Prefers cool or room-temperature water.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Keep with other hardy temperate species. Their fast feeding style can intimidate shy tankmates.

Aquarium Breeding: Easy to breed. Spawning is linked to lunar cycles in nature. Eggs hatch in 10-14 days and fry are easy to feed.

Risks and Diseases: Highly resistant to diseases, but will jump if startled. Ensure a secure cover glass is in place.
