Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Coastal salt marshes, tidal pools, and hypersaline lagoons along the US Atlantic and Gulf coasts.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Family Cyprinodontidae. Stout, deep-bodied fish with a small, terminal upturned mouth. Grows up to 7 cm.

Social Behavior: Highly active, schooling behavior. Males establish temporary spawning territories on the substrate, defending them aggressively.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Olive above and silver-white below. Spawning males display a bright metallic blue nape and iridescent orange breast.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Provide a sand substrate for digging. Use sturdy rocks or artificial plants to create line-of-sight barriers.

Diet and Feeding: Omnivore. Reads readily eats dry flake food, spirulina, frozen brine shrimp, and bloodworms. Sifts the sand for organic matter.

Water Quality: Highly adaptable. Can survive in fresh, brackish, or hypersaline water. Ideal temperature is cool to warm.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Best kept with robust temperate species. Spawning males can nip the fins of slower, long-finned tankmates.

Aquarium Breeding: Very easy. Spawning is continuous under warm conditions. Eggs are laid on sand or moss and hatch in 8-10 days.

Risks and Diseases: Resilient to most diseases. Ensure a tight lid is used as they are capable jumpers.
