Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Mangrove channels and mudflats of Southeast Asia. Common in tidal flats of Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.

Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the Gobiidae family, genus Periophthalmodon. Largest of the mudskippers, growing up to 27 cm.

Social Behavior: Exceptionally aggressive and territorial. Fights with rival males involve mouth-gaping and physically charging each other.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Dark brownish-grey body, often with a dark lateral stripe running from the eye. Eyes are large and gold-ringed. No obvious dimorphism.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Aquarium Setup: Heavy paludarium setup with robust branches and flat mud/sand areas. Must have an airtight, humid cover space.

Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. Feeds on earthworms, large crickets, river shrimps, small crabs, and fish pieces. Feed on land.

Water Quality: Brackish water parameters (SG 1.006-1.012). Powerful external canister filtration is needed to handle organic load.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Strictly single-specimen tanks. It is a predator that will consume any tankmates it can swallow.

Aquarium Breeding: Not achieved in captivity. Spawning requires deep mud burrows with air-storage chambers.

Risks and Diseases: Mechanical damage to eyes or skin from rough rocks. Excellent jumper and strong enough to push open loose lids.
